Most travelers that visit Big Spring don't immediately find the scene being modern or funky. Most visitors will likely gravitate to the iconic Settles Hotel for dinners and drinks and completely miss a must-visit watering hole. Just across the street from the Settles Hotel is the gem "Mezcal", a great dive bar exploding with personality.
Behind its opaque, glass wall is a bar that you might expect to find in Deep Ellum (Dallas, TX). The unassuming and almost bland exterior does not tell the story of this bar. What appears to be a refurbished abstract company with black-out tinted windows actually holds the largest selection of mezcal (a smoky flavored agave-based liquor) that I have found in the Permian Basin.
If you haven't tried mezcal liquor, don't worry you're not alone! Most restaurants and bars don't push the spirit much, but a good mezcal on the rocks is hard to beat. One of the signature cocktails at Mezcal is Casamigos on the rocks with an orange slice covered with tajin on the rim. It is a great start to the evening after a long day.
If margaritas are more your style, they make a great frozen or rocks and the bartenders are more than capable of mixing something from scratch!
The ambiance is surprising and entertaining. Music videos from generations past play above the black walled bar, against a chorus of mismatched music on the stereo. Much like this bar's vibe and location, the juxtaposition of sound and sight somehow come together to make something great!
If you are ever in Big Spring, TX, I highly recommend stopping at Mezcal, located just across the street from Hotel Settles.
